Sassari, the second most important town of Sardinia for its population, is in the north of the island and it stretches across a valley. In Sassari you can find a museum, the well know University and plenty of commercial activities, especially within the old city walls, where you can visit the Gotic Duomo and
the Church of S. Caterine with its façade in Spanish Barocco style. From the Piazza d'Italia know as the "sitting room of the town", you can walk through the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, in the hearth of the old town, up to sixteenth century Fountain of Rosello, just outside the ancient city walls.
Twice a year, in May and August, the old city center is overcroweded by tourist to see the "Cavalcata Sarda" and the Parade of the "Candelieri". Touristic attractions nearby Sassari are Alghero, the Argentiera, Stintino, Platamona and Castelsardo, all on the coast and everyone with its on characteristic sights.
The outskirts of Sassari are full of naturalistic attractions, like the Asinara Park and also significant archaeological sights, like the pre-nuragic altar of Monte d'Accoddi and the romans ruins of Porto Torres, the
medioeval town centre of Castelsardo, the nuragic castle of S.Antine of Torralba, the romanic Chapel of the Trinità di Saccargia and thousands of others historic and touristic places.
